🌎 How to help “Third Culture Kids” cope with the difficult return to their home country: the unknown?!

✅ The return of TCKs is one of the most impactful move probably these children will have to do at this stage in their life.

Indeed, even if a lots of TCKs are more likely to be open-minded, speak more than one language, have a broader world view and be more culturally aware. Life as a TCK can also create a sense of rootlessness and restlessness, for some of them, where home is “everywhere and nowhere.”

A smooth kids expat return (like for adults) can be anticipated with patience, a consistent preparation and a close “emotions monitoring”.

👇Here are a few tips that could help👇:

✅ Be aware of the possible existence of a sense of rootlessness, from the start of the moves, and discuss it with the child at their level of understanding (via books, talks, movies, school counselors, schools teachers, departures of friends..)
👉Listen and be aware of reactions..

✅ Be consistent, speak the “home country language” and return to the country on a regular basis
✅ The possible return should always be an option discussed with the expat kids
✅ Have a good patterns when living each countries: ie: a closure, reconnection, acknowledge feelings, emotions, look forward, new goals, etc.
✅ Apply these positive patterns when coming back
