👉The more I speak about my 20 years of experience abroad in various countries, the more I see the importance of explaining a few key concepts when presenting what expatriation is in reality and how to make it successful.
Meaning how to assure that everyone involved in this challenge (not only the assignee), will perform at its best and succeed.
Looking at the failure rate (early returns) still quite high for companies, there are still some misleading interpretations of what expatriation is.
💡Here are a few key concepts when speaking about the reality of expatriation to any audiences:
👉Expatriation is first and foremost:
#1 Experiencing: and with experience come lots of emotions such as fear, anxiety, anger, happiness, etc. And of course with no logical order..
#2 A long learning journey: “the hero’s journey”, where one needs to be able to learn effectively while experiencing, questioning, with a supportive system, and, that’s only when all the cross-cultural skills, agility needed will start to develop and grow…not before!
#2 Context-related: expatriation is unique, highly dependent on the assignee’s mission and personal situation
#3 A transformative journey involving 2 key abilities: the ability to manage paradoxes and the ability to let go (Osland).
#4 A system in motion: expatriation involves/impacts not only the assignee but a whole system with various elements at various times. Having a a systemic approach when managing it is therefore key!
💡From these concepts, various insightful, innovative, practical lectures can be developed and delivered to anyone interested in the success of expatriation!
